(162421) 2000 ET70 Goldstone Radar Observations Planning
(162421) 2000 ET70 was discovered by Lincoln Laboratory ETS (LINEAR) in New Mexico on March 8, 2000. Little is known about this Aten-class Potentially Hazardous Asteroid except that its absolute magnitude of 18.1, which suggests a diameter of ~750 m (within a factor of two). Whiteley (2001) classified 2000 ET70 as an X-type object, which is an ambiguous group that includes objects that are large and dark, metallic, and small and bright. Thus, the composition of this object is effectively unknown. 2000 ET70 will approach within 0.045 AU (17.7 lunar distances) on February 19, 2012. This asteroid will be a strong radar target at Goldstone and a very strong imaging target at Arecibo. We hope to obtain delay-Doppler images with resolutions at least as fine as 0.25 microseconds. 2000 ET70 will brighten to 13th magnitude in the second half of February when it will be an excellent target for photometry, spectroscopy, and infrared radiometry. Update on 2012 Feb 13: Arecibo radar imaging by Shantanu Naidu and Jean-Luc Margot suggests that 2000 ET70 is roughly 1.5 km in diameter and that it has a period of about 9 hours. Consequently, we have revised the estimated SNRs in the table below. This will be a significantly better imaging target than we originally anticipated.
