Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: 1999 JV6, 2001 WL15, and Toro
Delay-Doppler images of 1999 JV6 obtained on January 8, 2016. Resolution is 18.75 m x 0.16 Hz. Range increases down and Doppler frequency increases to the right. The images span about 40% of one rotation.
Delay-Doppler images of 1999 JV6 obtained on January 9, 2016. Resolution is 7.5 m x 0.14 Hz. Range increases down and Doppler frequency increases to the right. DSS-14 was used to transmit and Green Bank was used to receive.
Delay-Doppler images of 1999 JV6 obtained on January 10, 2016. Resolution is 18.75 m x 0.16 Hz. Range increases down and Doppler frequency increases to the right.
Delay-Doppler images of 1999 JV6 obtained on January 12, 2016. Resolution is 18.75 m x 0.16 Hz. Range increases down and Doppler frequency increases to the right. Goldstone was used to transmit and Green Bank was used to receive.
Delay-Doppler images of 1999 JV6 obtained on January 13, 2016. Resolution is 37.5 m x 0.3 Hz. Range increases down and Doppler frequency increases to the right. The first 22 images were bistatic with transmissions at Goldstone and reception at Green Bank. The remaining 9 images were monostatic at Goldstone.
85990 1999 JV6 1999 JV6 was discovered in May 1999 by LINEAR. 1999 JV6 has been observed using photometry, spectroscopy, IR radiometry, and radar during previous apparitions, so many of its physical properties are known. Binzel et al. (2001) found that this is an Xk-class object. Thermal infrared observations using the WISE spacecraft by Mainzer et al. (2011) and the Spitzer Space Telescope by Mueller et al. (2011) give a diameter of 0.45 km. Warner et al. (2014, 2015) estimate a rotation period of 6.54 h and a large lightcurve amplitude of 0.9 mag that indicates a very elongated shape. Radar imaging at Arecibo in January 2015 confirmed the elongation suggested by the lightcurves and provided delay-Doppler images that A. Rozek and S. Lowry have used to obtain a preliminary estimate of the 3D shape. The radar data reveal an obvious concavity and suggest that 1999 JV6 is a contact binary. In January 2016, 1999 JV6 will make another close approach at a distance of 0.032 au, which is several times closer than the encounter in 2015. The SNRs at Goldstone will be strong enough for imaging with a resolution of at least 1/8 usec and possibly 0.05 usec. We also requested time at Green Bank to receive in order to boost the SNRs. An extensive campaign of radar imaging is also planned at Arecibo. In 2016 this object will approach from the south and enter the beam at Goldstone on January 8, several days before it moves into the declination window at Arecibo. We will observe it at southern declinations to take advantage of the sky positions to lengthen the arc of the combined Goldstone + Arecibo observations, which will help with estimation of the pole direction and enable significant improvements in the preliminary shape model. The Minor Planet Center has classified 1999 JV6 as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid." 337866 2001 WL15 2001 WL15 was discovered by NEAT at Haleakala-AMOS on 2001 November 23. Binzel et al. (2004) report that this is an Sk-class object. Its absolute magnitude is 18.3, that, combined with the spectral class, suggests a diameter in the realm of 700-800 meters. The spin state is unknown, but this object will be relatively bright in December and early January, probably reaching 14th magnitude, so the rotation period may be measured shortly before the radar observations start. ** Update on 2016 Jan. 6: Brian Warner reports a preliminary period of 8.9 hours and a lightcurve amplitude of 0.1 mag. This doubles the SNRs relative to our earlier guess but this will still be a relatively weak target at Goldstone. This object was detected at Arecibo on 2015 Dec. 18. The bandwidth was about 1.5 Hz and SC/OC = 0.24. This asteroid will approach within 0.080 au (31 lunar distances) on 2016 January 14. We are expecting relatively weak SNRs at Goldstone that will be sufficient for CW and ranging observations but probably not suitable for delay-Doppler imaging. 2001 WL15 should be an imaging target at Arecibo. 1685 Toro Toro was discovered by C. A. Wirtanen at Mt. Hamilton (California) in 1948. It was one of the first near-Earth asteroids discovered and it's also among the largest, with a diameter of about 3.4 km. Toro has been studied extensively and many of its physical properties are known. Toro has a rotation period of 10.2 h and a very high lightcurve amplitude of 1.4 mag, which is indicative of a very elongated shape. Toro was the second near-Earth asteroid detected by radar (in 1972 at Goldstone; Goldstein et al. 1973). To date, it has been detected by radar four times: 1972, 1980, 1988, and 2012. The elongated shape implied by the lightcurve amplitude has been confirmed by large bandwidth variations in Arecibo echo power spectra reported by Ostro et al. 1983. Toro will be a moderately strong radar target at Goldstone in 2016 with SNRs strong enouch for CW echoes, ranging, and perhaps coarse-resolution imaging. Given its diameter, 1 usec data should spatially resolve it. This asteroid has also been observed by NASA's WISE spacecraft, so the radar data we obtain will be useful for calibrating the diameter estimated from WISE observations.

Uncertainties
1999 JV6 1999 JV6 exhibits non-gravitational perturbations in its motion, presumably due to the Yarkovsky effect, so formal uncertainties are no longer available. The uncertainties below were estimated before non-gravitational perturbations were apparent and indicate that the orbit is well known, pointing won't be a problem, and the Doppler uncertainties are small. If we see a correction to the ephemeris, it's likely it will be most evident in time delay. Setups
For 1999 JV6, the rotation period and estimated diameter suggest that the bandwidth will be about 7 Hz. This object is highly elongated, so we expect to see significant bandwith variations as it spins. We're going to start with a standard CW setup, which should work fine: CW setup: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- TX polarization RCP RCV polarization LCP & RCP Frequency hops: no hopping Bandwidth: 5000 Hz TXoffset +500 Hz Sampling interval: 2500 x 0.1 usec FFT for PFS files: 10000 for 0.5 Hz resolution Ranging setups: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10-usec baud 10 usec code 127 PRP 1270 usec FFT 128 ncoh 1 bandwidth 787 Hz resolution 12.3 Hz TXOFF +100 Hz (echo in bin 32 + 8 = 40) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11-usec baud 11 usec code 127 PRP 1397 usec FFT 64 ncoh 1 bandwidth 716 Hz resolution 11.2 Hz TXOFF +100 Hz (echo in bin 32 + 9= 41) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1-usec baud 1 usec code 255 FFT 512 ncoh 16 bandwidth 245 Hz resolution 0.48 Hz TXOFF +50 Hz ---------------------------------------------------------------------
