22771 (1999 CU3) Planning
22771 (1999 CU3) was discovered by LINEAR on February 10, 1999. Arecibo obsevations in 2001 revealed that 1999 CU3 is a highly elongated and irregularly-shaped object that rotates about once every four hours. There are no lightcurves available for this object, but it will be well-positioned for photometry and vis-IR spectroscopy September and October, so it is possible that the rotation period and taxonomic class may become known shortly after the radar tracks.
Goldstone obsevations are scheduled on five days between September 15-22. Arecibo observations scheduled for September 10-12 have been successful and have already improved the orbit. Consequently, we will start the Goldstone observations with an excellent orbit. The combined Goldstone and Arecibo observations should provide good sky coverage on the object, which could be important for constraining its pole direction (which is unknown). Due to the asteroid's rapid motion northward in declination, it is not observable at Arecibo during the Goldstone tracks. Arecibo collages are available at: Sep. 10 Arecibo images Sep. 11 Arecibo images Sep. 12 Arecibo images A photometric campaign will be undertaken in late September and October at Elginfield Observatory (near London, Ontario, Canada) by Prof. Peter Brown (University of Western Ontario) and at Ondrejov Observatory (Czech Republic) by Petr Pravec.
