(137032) 1998 UO1 Goldstone Radar Observations Planning


Background

(137032) 1989 UR was discovered by LINEAR on October 19, 1998.  
It will approach within 0.0630 AU (24.5 lunar distances) on September 26 when it
will be a moderately strong radar target at Goldstone.  

1998 UO1 has a rapid rotation period of 2.9 hours and a low lightcurve amplitude
of only 0.04 magnitudes (Pravec et al., unpublished), suggesting a shape with
a low elongation.  Pravec et al. (2006) suggest that ~2/3 of near-Earth
asteroids with such rapid rotation periods are binary systems, but thus far
it is unknown in this object has any satellites.

The absolute magnitude of 16.6 suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 1.5 km.
Wolters et al. (2008) obtained an upper bound on its diameter of 1.13 km and a lower
bound on its optical albedo of 0.29 from infrared radiometry.

Goldstone observations are scheduled on September 22, 24, 26, and 28.  
Arecibo observations are scheduled on September 19-22.

This object will brighten to about 14th magnitude in late September and early October
when it will be an excellent target for photometric and spectroscopic observations.
