(326290) 1998 HE3 Goldstone Radar Observations Planning

Background

Near-Earth asteroid (326290) 1998 HE3 was discovered by R. A. Tucker at Goodricke-Pigott Observatory, Tucson on April 21, 1998.
Not much is known about this object except that its absolute magnitude of 21.7 suggests a diameter of ~140 m (within a factor of two).
1998 HE3 belongs to the Aten class of asteroids and it makes regular 10-30 lunar distance
approaches to both Venus and Earth. On May 10, 2012, it will encounter Earth encounter at 12.4
lunar distances, the closest approach until 2059.

This asteroid will be a relatively weak radar target (most likely CW-only) at Goldstone
and a strong imaging target at Arecibo.

1998 HE3 will brighten to 16th magnitude in early May and it would be very helpful
if someone could estimate the rotation period and confirm the spectral class.

1998 HE3 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.
