(175706) 1996 FG3 Goldstone Radar Observations Planning
(175706) 1996 FG3 was discovered on March 23, 1996 by R. H. McNaught at Siding Spring Observatory. 1996 FG3 is a binary asteroid (Pravec et al. 1998; Mottola and Lahulla 2000) that is the primary target of ESA's proposed "Marco Polo-R" mission. That mission proposal has reached the final four in ESA's "Cosmic Visions" program and it also has a significant JPL hardware contribution, so there is intense interest from both NASA and ESA in radar observations of this asteroid. This asteroid was scheduled twice at Arecibo, first in November, 1998, and again in May, 2009, but both opportunities were missed due to equipment problems. We have another chance to observe this object in November and December of 2011. 1996 FG3 will be a CW target at Goldstone, while we expect high-resolution (0.1 usec) delay-Doppler imaging at Arecibo. Because the rotation period and pole direction of the primary are already known, CW echoes that provide the bandwith will also provide an estimate of the diameter for the primary, and, due to other results provided from photometry, an estimate of the semimajor axis of the system's orbit. Then we can use Kepler's 3rd law to estimate the mass and bulk density, which are invaluable for mission planning. The primary of 1996 FG3 has a diameter of ~1.7 km and a rotation period of 3.59 h (Pravec et al. 2000, Pravec et al. 2006). The secondary is about 1/3 the size of the primary and has an orbital period of 16.4 h, but it is unlikely that echoes from the secondary will be strong enough to detect at Goldstone. Scheirich and Pravec (2009) reported that that the system’s bulk density is 1.4 g cm^3, with uncertainties of up to 100%. Spectroscopy suggests that 1996 FG3 is a C-class (Binzel et al. 2002; Bus and Binzel 2002) or X-class (Whiteley 2001) object. Goldstone observations are scheduled on six dates between November 20-27. Arecibo observations started on November 6 and are also scheduled on Nov. 17-22 and Dec. 13-14. The Arecibo detection on November 6 indicates that the radar albedo is about 0.3, so we have revised the SNR estimates upward accordingly. The Arecibo images suggest that the primary is about 1.8 km in diameter and that the secondary is roughly 500 m in diameter. 1996 FG3 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.
