1994 XD Goldstone Radar Observations Planning

Background

1994 XD is a binary near-Earth asteroid that was discovered by Spacewatch (Kitt Peak, AZ)
on December 1, 1994.

It was imaged at coarse resolution and relatively modest SNRs at Arecibo in 2005, which
revealed the presence of a satellite, but the previous radar observations were insufficient
to estimate the orbital parameters of the system or a shape model for either component.

The 2005 Arecibo images suggest that the primary is roughly 0.6 km in diameter and place an
upper bound on its rotation period of 4.2 hours. We don't have a detailed estimate for
the diameter of the secondary. The spectral class is unknown. To the best of our knowledge,
there are no lightcurves, so a more precise estimate of the rotation period is not
available either. The S-band circular polarization ratio SC/OC = 0.21.

1994 XD will approach within 0.052 AU (20 lunar distances) on Nov. 27, 2012. It will be
moderately strong radar target at Goldstone and we hope to obtain images with resolutions as fine as 0.5 usec.
Time to observe 1994 XD has also requested at Arecibo, where it should be a strong imaging target.

1994 XD will be too close to the Sun for most of the fall for optical observations, so there
may not be any more ephemeris updates before the radar tracks. It will be a good target for
lightcurves and spectroscopy shortly after the radar observations start.

about twice as strong, so we don't plan any more observations of 2007 PA8.

Uncertainties

From Jon Giorgini, Nov 27:
Three new optical measurements reported by Cerro Tololo Observatory
(site 807) were used to update 1994 XD to orbit solution #36, now
on aardvark.

The new data differed from/corrected the prediction of s34 by ~5",
so a sub-sigma change in pointing.

Formal 3-sigma .s36 S/X-band uncertainties.

From Jon Giorgini, Nov 26:

Based on 151 optical measurements (1994-Dec-1 to 2012-Apr-24) and
2 delay and 1 Doppler from Arecibo (Jun 24-25, 2005), 1994 XD
orbit solution #34 was estimated and OSOD with nominal predicts

Setups

Due to its 4.2-hour rotation period and estimated size, we are expecting a bandwidth of about 14 Hz.
The SNRs should be strong enough to see an echo relatively quickly, so we'll start with a setup
with 0.98 Hz resolution, and then we'll switch to ranging, and, we hope, coarse-resolution imaging.

Initial CW setup:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
TX polarization RCP
RCV polarization LCP & RCP
Frequency hops: 2
Dwell: 20 seconds
Bandwidth: 4000 Hz
Sampling interval: 2500 x 0.1 usec
VME FFT for PSD files: 4096 for 0.98 Hz resolution
